Played open, the strings sound B-E-A-D-F#-B – from B1 at the bottom to B3 at the top, a span of 2 octaves. Step by step across the neck the intervals are a fourth, a fourth, a fourth, a major third, a fourth, and that is what decides how chord shapes fall under the hand.
B Standard is a full fourth below standard tuning – the six-string equivalent of a seven-string's range without the extra string. Every interval is preserved, so the fretboard logic is untouched; what changes is that the guitar now occupies territory that overlaps with the bass.
This is baritone country. On a normal scale the strings need to be very heavy to hold pitch, and the nut slots usually have to be opened up to take them. Instruments built for this tuning use a 27" scale or longer.
This is a long drop: 5 semitones below Standard E. Standard gauges will flap at this pitch. A heavy set, and often a longer scale, is what makes the tuning playable rather than merely possible.
History
Where the B Standard tuning comes from
B standard is the natural tuning of the baritone guitar, a longer-scale instrument pitched a fourth below the guitar that Danelectro helped establish in the late 1950s and that turned up on surf records and film soundtracks. Metal bands began tuning ordinary six-strings this low in the 1990s and 2000s – it puts the low string on the same B as the extra string of a seven-string – though at this pitch a longer scale and heavier strings are almost a necessity.
