About Open A 2 tuning
Compared with Standard E, Open A 2 moves 3 strings. Every change is upward, the largest by 2 semitones, so the strings pull tighter than in Standard E.3 strings stay exactly where they were.
| String | Standard E | Open A 2 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | D3 | E3 | up 2 semitones |
| 4 | G3 | A3 | up 2 semitones |
| 5 | B3 | C#4 | up 2 semitones |
Played open, the strings sound E-A-E-A-C#-E – from E2 at the bottom to E4 at the top, a span of 2 octaves. Step by step across the neck the intervals are a fourth, a fifth, a fourth, a major third, a minor third, and that is what decides how chord shapes fall under the hand.
Strummed open, with nothing fretted, the strings spell A. That is what makes a tuning like this useful for slide playing and drones – a full chord is one straight barre away at any fret. See A shapes in this tuning →
The strings are pulled above their normal pitch, so a lighter set reduces the risk of breaking a string or over-loading the neck.
