How is a drum machine better than a metronome for practice?
A metronome only marks the pulse; a groove also tells you where the kick and snare fall, which is what you lock onto in a band. Practising riffs and strumming patterns against a real beat trains feel and dynamics, not just timing. For pure tempo work the metronome is still the sharper tool.
What does swing do?
Swing delays every second 16th (or 8th) note. At 50 % the grid is straight; around 66 % it becomes the triplet feel of blues, jazz and hip-hop; 75 % is a hard dotted shuffle. Swing applies to the even grids – the 12/8 grid is already written in triplets.
Can I make my own beat?
Yes. Tap any cell to cycle it between off, hit and accent, use Clear to start from scratch and mute a row with M. Your pattern, tempo and settings are saved in this browser and come back on your next visit.
Does it work on my phone and offline?
Yes. The drums are generated by the Web Audio API, so there are no samples to download. Once you have opened the page, it keeps working without a connection.
