About Low G tuning

Compared with Standard (GCEA), Low G moves 1 string. Every change is downward, the largest by 12 semitones, so the instrument sits at lower tension than in Standard (GCEA).3 strings stay exactly where they were.

Played open, the strings sound G-C-E-A – from G3 at the bottom to A4 at the top, a span of 1 octave and 2 semitones. Step by step across the neck the intervals are a fourth, a major third, a fourth, and that is what decides how chord shapes fall under the hand.

Left open, the strings together spell C6. That is a by-product of how the intervals are laid out rather than the point of the tuning, but it does mean some chords need very few fingers here. See C6 shapes in this tuning →

Low G replaces the re-entrant fourth string with one tuned an octave down, usually a wound string, so the ukulele runs from low to high like a normal instrument. The chord shapes do not change at all – only what the lowest note of each chord is.

It buys range and a proper bass note for fingerpicking and solo arrangements, and it costs the characteristic re-entrant sparkle. Players who arrange melodies for the instrument tend to prefer it; players who strum and sing usually stay with high G.

History

Where the Low G tuning comes from

Low-G tuning replaces the high G with one an octave lower, giving a linear scale and a fuller bass. It became popular with tenor ukulele players in the 20th century, especially in jazz and solo instrumental playing, because it extends the range downward.
