About Standard (G-D-G-D) tuning
Standard (G-D-G-D) is the reference tuning for the Liuqin – the pitch the instrument normally ships at, and the starting point every other tuning on this page is measured from.
Played open, the strings sound G-D-G-D – from G3 at the bottom to D5 at the top, a span of 1 octave and 7 semitones. Step by step across the neck the intervals are a fifth, a fourth, a fifth, and that is what decides how chord shapes fall under the hand.
Strummed open, the strings spell G5 – root and fifth with no third, so the tuning stays neutral between major and minor.
The liuqin is the soprano of the Chinese plucked strings: a small pear-shaped lute, related to the pipa, tuned G-D-G-D an octave above the zhongruan. It is played with a plectrum and carries melodies over the orchestra with a bright, cutting attack.
Older liuqins had two or three strings; the modern four-string instrument was standardised in the 1970s, and the tuning above is the one method books and orchestral parts assume.
History
Liuqin
The liuqin is named after its willow-leaf shape. It was a simple folk instrument with two strings and bamboo frets from eastern China – Shandong, Jiangsu and Anhui – where it accompanied the local opera known as liuqin xi.
Its transformation came in the late 1950s, when Wang Huiran created a three-string and then a four-string liuqin with a full chromatic set of frets. Wang also wrote the first solo pieces for it, and the liuqin became the soprano voice of the plucked section in the Chinese orchestra.

G-D-G-D is the standard tuning of the four-string liuqin, developed by Wang Huiran in the late 1950s and 60s.
