Played open, the strings sound A-E-A-D-G-B-E – from A1 at the bottom to E4 at the top, a span of 2 octaves and 7 semitones. Step by step across the neck the intervals are a fifth, a fourth, a fourth, a fourth, a major third, a fourth, and that is what decides how chord shapes fall under the hand.
Drop A on a seven-string does to the low B what Drop D does to the low E: drops it a whole tone so that the bottom three strings form a power chord under one finger. The six strings above it stay in standard tuning.
This is the workhorse tuning of modern progressive metal and djent. It combines the lowest register commonly used on guitar with a completely familiar fretboard above it.
The drop is small enough that a standard set handles it. If the lowest string starts to rattle against the frets, one step up in gauge fixes it.

Where the Drop A tuning comes from
Drop A on the seven-string lowers the B string by a whole step so that the bottom three strings form a one-finger power chord, just as Drop D does on a six-string. It spread in the nu metal and metalcore of the late 1990s and 2000s; no specific originator is documented.
