Played open, the strings sound D-A-D-G – from D1 at the bottom to G2 at the top, a span of 1 octave and 5 semitones. Step by step across the neck the intervals are a fifth, a fourth, a fourth, and that is what decides how chord shapes fall under the hand.

Drop D on bass lowers the E string a whole tone, matching the guitarist who has done the same thing. When the band moves to Drop D the bass usually follows, and the low D adds a note the standard bass simply does not have.
The upper three strings are untouched, so nothing you know changes above the fourth string.
The drop is small enough that a standard set handles it. If the lowest string starts to rattle against the frets, one step up in gauge fixes it.
History
Where the Drop D tuning comes from
Drop D on the bass extends the range down to low D, which is useful for songs in D. By the 1980s mechanical detuners, such as the Hipshot, let bassists drop the E string to D at the flick of a lever, and the tuning became common in rock and metal alongside Drop D guitar.
